Rarely does a love so strong, so deep as what Francesca and Robert experienced happen. It was not your everyday love affair, but a chance meeting which Robert believed he had been destined for all his life. Francesca was so taken by surprise about her feelings because she had a family and thought she was happily married. But she had buried a part of her long ago that had longed for something else other than what she had settled for.
Bridges of Madison County is in fact about a world-class freelance photographer, Robert Kincaid, who worked mostly for National Geographic traveling the world taking photos. Robert shot some of National Geographic’s best front covers and gave tremendous realism and depth to the articles he photographed for. This particular assignment was to take photos of old covered bridges in Madison County, Iowa. They were supposed to be some of the oldest, still standing covered bridges in the country.
Robert was having a hard time finding the last bridge he was supposed to shoot, so he decided to finally do the unmanly thing and (gasp!) ask for directions. He had stopped at a gas station and asked the clerk for directions, but found the guy’s directions hard to follow once he left and he still could not find the bridge he was supposed to photograph. National Geographic was always very specific in what he was supposed to photograph; however, the creativity of how to shoot that particular piece was left up to him. So he knew he had to find the bridge, skipping this one bridge was not an option.
He found himself along an old, desolate road and came upon a long lane leading to an old farmhouse. He turned into the lane and came upon Francesca out in the yard. His intentions were to ask for directions to the old bridge, but sexual tensions and strong vibrations began to flow immediately for both Robert and Francesca, although Francesca didn’t recognize these feelings at first for what they actually were.
Francesca, a mostly reserved farmer’s wife, decided instead of just telling Robert where the bridge was she should go with him and show him personally. She convinced herself it was the neighborly thing to do, and since her husband and children were at the state fair for the week showing off their prized steer, she had lots of extra time on her hands.
On the contrary, her true intentions were the fact that she really just wanted to spend a little more time with Robert getting to know him better. She was truly intrigued with him from the first moment; he was so different than her husband and the other men around the farms in Iowa. He had traveled around the world, seen and experienced many things. Perhaps he had even been to her birthplace of Italy. Francesca felt they had so much to share with each other even though they had just barely met.
Bridges of Madison County takes you on a heart-warming journey of what it’s like to find your true love, your soul mate and all the wondrous and glorious feelings that a love like that can bring two people; changing in an instant the course of their lives forever. Part of that change though includes the gut-wrenching decisions to be made on how and what to tell the family that you have loved and cared for all these years. Yes, that my friend is the tough part, the part that either makes or breaks a relationship, a family, a life.
