3rd Degree is the third book in James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club Series. The Women’s Murder Club is a unique and diverse blend of friends that all happen to have high-powered jobs that lend themselves to various elements of solving crimes.
The main character, Lindsay Boxer, is head of the San Francisco Crime Investigation Detective Squad. She has experience combined with an innate sense of intuitiveness and raw determination to get to the bottom of a crime. Of course, being close friends with 3 of San Francisco’s top women in positions of power doesn’t hurt either.
Jill Bernhardt is the assistant attorney D.A. following in her father’s law footsteps. She takes on some of the toughest crime cases in the city. While her professional life is one of a strong, capable woman in a position of power, her home life leaves much to be desired. She lost a child during pregnancy and her husband belittles her saying she can’t even do what every other woman on earth was designed to do and does every day – have a child.
Cindy Thomas is a newspaper reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle who definitely has a nose for news. She can dig up a story and come up with the facts faster than anyone. At times she finds herself in a bit of a predicament between being loyal to her friends, being loyal to her sources, and being loyal to herself and her fans.
Claire Washburn is the county Medical Examiner who gets to do autopsies on all the victims that Cindy writes about and Lindsay and Jill fight for. Claire is not just your typical Medical Examiner doing a job, she knows the body and the body functions well. She can unravel the mysteries of what happened during death and after death to piece together crime scenes and any trends that occur better than just about any Medical Examiner around.
These 4 friends come together to solve one of San Francisco’s most terrifying crimes in some time. What starts out as a horrible homicide quickly turns into a full-scale terrorist attack. With hundreds of people being senselessly killed including close friends and neighbors, they work together along with the FBI and the head of Homeland Security to find the white rabbit of the 60’s heading up the terrible attacks.
James Patterson does a wonderful job making the characters come to life, seeming like you know them personally. He is outstanding at taking you through the twists and turns of the fright and terror that comes about from a mass murderer on the loose with revenge as a motive. I found myself continually thinking of 911 and what happened then and how the world has changed in the aftermath of that terrible day.
In my opinion, the romance Patterson tries to weave into the story, particularly at the end doesn’t add much to the story line. There are much better romance authors out there and perhaps Patterson should just stick to the crime detective story lines. He is however, remarkable at creating these detective crime-thriller types of novels. I’m looking forward to listening to more of Patterson’s work.
