Once again Patterson reigns supreme at the ultimate crime-thriller in 5th Horseman where deception and death are running rampant and the few clues are scattered about with no way to connect them.
Linsay Boxer assumes her typical role as lead crime detective just like in the other Women’s Murder Club mystery series. In 5th Horseman, Patterson makes it personal by including close friends of Boxer in the string of victims being mysteriously murdered at San Francisco General Hospital just before they are scheduled to be released.
You get to journey through all the twists, turns, and deceptive plots as Boxer along with her girls, Claire and Cindy, come together to help solve one of San Francisco’s biggest mystery murder crimes. Fueling all of their passion in solving the crimes is the desire to help their friend Yuki, who lost her mother at San Francisco General to a supposed last minute setback after she was already checked out and ready to be released the following morning.
The same string of events had happened to countless other patients too. Patients would be admitted to the ER of San Francisco General for a variety of reasons from a broken arm to a stroke or heart attack. Then they would begin recovering normally, and be scheduled for release from the hospital. Just before their release, usually the night before, some unexpected “condition” would occur resulting in death. Even stranger was the fact that some orderlies were reporting the dead patients were found with special coins covering both eyes.
San Francisco General was denying there was anything strange going on and trying to keep as much out of the media as possible. Finally they got taken to court, but that’s when things started to get really interesting and personal agendas started unraveling while the murders were continuing to happen and be covered up.
Boxer and her partner Jacoby go at this case whole-heartedly tracking down every lead they have, taking every gut feeling and assumption they have to piece together the clues one by one to track down the killer or killers.
While the two detectives uncover lots of deceptive plots by multiple parties with the help of many people, the real killer continues to roam free continuing what they had started long, long ago.
I found myself wondering throughout this audio book why Patterson named this one 5th Horseman. You will have to wait to almost the very end, where he explains it nicely, and you have one of those ah-ha moments.
When I started listening to this audio book, I was traveling and figured I’d listen to it a bit then switch and do some work. However, I was so captivated by the plot and fully engrossed in trying to figure out the clues myself that I ended up listening to the whole thing straight through and couldn’t stop even though my ears were getting a bit sore from the earbuds I had to use connected to my Zune.
If you want to experience a fast-moving, action-packed crime thriller, or you’re a Women’s Murder Club fan you’ll definitely want to listen to the 5th Horseman. You might want to make sure you have several hours to dedicate to listening because you’re not going to want to stop until you’ve reached the very end!
