E Myth Revisited had been such a popular download on eMediaXpress.com that I decided I wanted to see what all the excitement was about. However, in the back of my mind, I had the impression that it would be another rather boring, dry sales and marketing book with the author stroking his ego with his own voice and the miraculous discoveries he had uncovered.
Boy was I wrong! E Myth Revisited and Michael Gerber are both far from the initial picture I had formed in my mind. Gerber uses his own experiences, the experiences of his company, e Myth Worldwide, right along with a wonderful interview of a client named Sarah to beautifully weave passion, details and personality throughout the book.
Gerber talks about every person having three personalities or spirits, if you will --- an entrepreneur, a manager, and a technician. What is different in each one of us is how dominate one personality is over the others. However, no matter which one is dominate, there is always conflict between the three.
What gets most people in trouble who start a business is the technician personality taking over because they are very good at a specific job or task thinking that is the only thing required to run a successful business. However, you need the big picture person, someone to figure out innovative ways to attract customers, and someone to manage the people, systems and tasks that go along with every business.
E Myth Revisited talks about Franchise prototypes and how good systems always produce results regardless of the people in those systems. Actually, Gerber says each position should have the lowest qualified person still capable of doing the job, not the best of the best. Think McDonalds, Fed Ex, or just about any other long-standing successful franchise operation.
Innovation, Quantification, and Orchestration are the key themes throughout the book. If you can innovate, have a measurement system to quantify results, and have a system to orchestrate all the pieces together seamlessly, then you will have one outstanding business.
Note I said business and not a job. That is another key pitfall of most new small business owners. They just end up creating another job for themselves instead of a business, and the job they create for themselves is usually much more difficult and time-consuming than the job they just had to leave.
Gerber teaches through gentle reminders and pleasant conversation that you should work on your business and not in your business. In addition, to work on yourself not work yourself into the ground. These are wise words to take to heart and live with my friends.
If you are in business for yourself or thinking about starting your own business, do yourself a favor right now and download E Myth Revisited. I promise you will not be disappointed.

"Gerber loves to exhort people to develop powerful visions for their companies." —Fortune
In this compact disc edition of the totally revised underground bestseller The E-Myth, Michael Gerber dispels the myths surrounding starting your own business and shows how commonplace assumptions can get in the way of running a business. He walks you through the steps in the life of a business— from entrepreneurial infancy, through adolescent growing pains, to the mature entrepreneurial perspective, the guiding light of all businesses that succeed— and shows how to apply the lessons of franchising to any business, whether or not it is a franchise. Finally, Gerber draws the vital, often overlooked distinction between working on your business and working in your business. After you have listened to The E-Myth Revisited, you will truly be able to grow your business in a predictable and productive way.
MICHAEL E. GERBER is the Founder and Chairman of E-Myth Worldwide, where he originated his own unique form of small business reengineering processes on behalf of his more than 25, 000 small business clients.
