I must admit that Heaven and Earth was the first Nora Roberts book I had read or listened to. Boy, what was I thinking?! Roberts is a wonderful author who very carefully constructs and builds each character to the point you feel like you personally know them and their family along with all their character traits and idiosyncrasies.
The other thing I truly like about Nora Roberts’ writing style is that she offers a complete stand alone novel for the once in a while reader, while intricately weaving each novel into a themed series to be read one after the other for the more serious book lover.
Heaven and Earth is the second novel in the Three Sisters Island series. History has it that Three Sisters Island was created long, long ago by witches for witches when all of the Salem witch hunts and massacres were occurring.
Each of the main characters have so much personality and carry so much weight, it would be hard to name the stand-out or favorite. However, I think my choice would be Mac. He was kind, down-to-earth, highly intuitive, and a bit on the nerdy side. He loved researching the super-natural and recording as much of it in real life as he could. He played a big part in the way the end came about for Ripley Todd, the deputy sheriff of Three Sister’s Island.
Ripley was a high-strung, smart-mouth sort of woman who liked to have her own way on her own terms. She had never loved a man before and Mac swept her off her feet before she had even known what happened. Unfortunately, in the cards, and in her dreams, she always wound up hurting the one she loved. She was mortified it would happen in real life.
Mia is the strong, silent one who once had her heart broken and has closed all of those doors seemingly forever. She runs a successful bookstore on Three Sisters Island and is quite happy doing that and continually working with the powers bestowed upon her.
Nell Todd is the charming, down-home, loving wife of the sheriff on Three Sisters Island and sister-in-law to Ripley. Nell had a long and twisted background before arriving at Three Sisters Island. However, what she had went through previously ended up making her the strongest of the three.
It took all the love, power, and soul that the three had to endure what fate had set before them. Luckily Mac also provided some much needed insight and support himself, although he wasn’t officially bestowed with his own powers.
I will admit I was skeptical in the beginning about listening to this book. However, within just a few minutes I found myself intrigued with the characters and before long, I was totally wrapped up in the thick of it and couldn’t wait until I could listen to the next chapter. Even though the book can easily stand on its own, now that I know Dance Upon the Air was the first in the series, I wished I would have started with it.
