Do you want to be a better friend? Do you want to be a better parent? Do you want people to genuinely listen to you and embrace your ideas and suggestions?
If you’re like most people, you would love to have the tools to accomplish just these things and more. Dale Carnegie gives you such tools through his solid principles in How To Win Friends and Influence People. Although first published in 1937, the information contained is still rock solid advice even in today’s ever-changing world.
Perhaps How to Win Friends and Influence People is even more important today as people skills are not being taught in schools, nor by time-strapped parents. Statistics show that financial success of an individual is 15% due to technical knowledge and 85% due to human engineering skills – specifically the ability to lead others.
Good leaders, good parents, and good friends usually all have some core components in common that contribute towards their success. Carnegie captures these components or skills as basic principles to follow. He doesn’t give a dry, boring talk but instead relays the understanding of each principle through the life and experiences of his students over the years which makes for an interesting learning experience.
The nine principles of being a good leader and guiding others are:
- Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
- Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly.
- Talk about your own mistakes first before criticizing.
- Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
- Allow the other person to save face.
- Praise the slightest improvement and every improvement.
- Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
- Use encouragement and make the fault seem easy to correct.
- Make people happy about what you suggest.
While those nine principles seem easy and just like common sense, you would be amazed at how many people aren’t aware of them, or haven’t practiced them enough for it to come easily. Part of it is human nature, and the need to put ourselves first. A good leader puts the feelings of others first, making them feel good about themselves and what you’re asking them to do or guiding them towards.
Carnegie does just a fabulous job not only talking about these principles but giving good examples and suggestions about how to carry them out in every day circumstances.
The principles and suggestions in How To Win Friends and Influence People have stood the test of time and I feel that they will continue to do that for a very long time to come. The audio book is such a fantastic resource that you will want to listen to again and again taking notes and then begin implementing the principles to start improving your relationships with others in your life. I certainly wish I had listened to this book much sooner, my life up to this point would have been much better!

Wow! So simple yet amazingly powerful stuff. If you found an envelope with 50 crisp $100 bills in it, would you bother to pick it up? This book is a classic and by far one of my all time favouries. The audiobook only intensifies the lessons and makes it even more irresistible. I'm happily sitting here profusely taking notes, listening over and over again. A gift that's clearly worth its weight in gold.

The book is truly a classic...but having the audio to listen to anytime (usually in the car or on my personal walkman!) is just brilliant. I tell all my clients to listen to this...
