After seeing this audio book zoom up the charts in the number of customer downloads here at eMediaXpress.com, I knew that I was definitely going to have to listen to I Am Legend. Boy am I glad I did. I was hooked from the first five minutes; which, by the way you can listen to for free!
Stephen King has said "I think the author who influenced me most as a writer was Richard Matheson. Books like I Am Legend were an inspiration to me." Since I am a huge Stephen King fan (I have read and/or listened to every book he has written under every pen name!) I thought right away that this would be one great horror book. I was not to be disappointed; I Am Legend is an outstanding audio book to listen to. Not only is the story line good and well written; the narrator, Robertson Dean, is outstanding and makes the audio version zing with emotion while making the story very believable and real.
Matheson did a fantastic job writing an intriguing, believable story about the much over-written subject of vampires. Not only have vampires been in umpteen movies and books in the past, in most instances, they looked so fake, or the story line was so poor that you didn’t really believe in the vampire, much less the horror that was trying to be associated with the script. Matheson changes all that in I Am Legend. Through his masterful writing, he actually makes you feel like you personally know what it is like to be a vampire, how you would feel and act and react. The horror and edge of your seat suspense, along with the way the story flowed reminded me of many Stephen King novels. I can now understand why King said I Am Legend was an inspiration. If I hadn’t known better, I might have thought Stephen King himself had written it.
The story is about a man named Robert Neville who is supposedly the last living man on earth who is not a vampire. He stocks up his supplies, does chores, and repairs the damage done by the vampires during the daylight hours. However, at night he becomes a prisoner in his own home not daring to go out among the dead. Neville manages to live for years this way while simultaneously trying to scientifically figure out how the vampires live and function. He becomes positive that a vampiress germ caused the destruction of humanity as he knew it and if only he can figure out a cure, he could save the vampires who are still living. It is through this scientific research that Matheson manages to make the vampires seem so real. In fact, you even start to feel sorry for them.
Through Neville, Matheson takes you through more emotional turmoil and terror than most people experience in a lifetime. He lives the life of a hermit, he has to perform all community jobs himself, he had to bury his wife and daughter, plus the future existence of the human race is fully upon his shoulders. Whew, that’s enough to make your head swim and stop before you’ve even started! But, Neville never stopped, he kept on to the very end. That’s exactly what I did, kept on listening until the very end. I just couldn’t stop. I put everything else on hold to listen through this audio book in one sitting! Highly, highly recommended.
