The Lake House is the follow-up novel to When the Wind Blows that was wildly successful selling over 4 million copies. Even though it’s listed under the crime thriller category which Patterson is well-known for, The Lake House could just as easily be listed under the Science Fiction category as well. He takes biotechnology to a new and personal level in this novel. While he mixes in just the right dose of fantasy, he also manages to bring out the gut-wrenching emotions of being human as well.
The story is about six very different children who had the fortune or misfortune, depending on how you looked at it, to be genetically altered and engineered in the womb. While they were once together, our wonderful justice system decided it was in the children’s best interest to split them apart. Not good, not good at all because that allowed others to pursue the children for their own evil greed and to carry out their own most immoral plans.
From the trial to the break-ins to the loving, yet somewhat mis-matched family who developed strong bonds that held them together through thick and thin, these were all the things that screamed real life. The fact that there was so many real life situations that you could relate to helped make the fantasy part of what the children were and where they came from seem much more real and believable. It certainly got me thinking with all the knowledge and technology we have available today, just what types of things are going on in the depths of evil minds and places.
Patterson does his traditional great job of developing every character’s personality, while the two narrators, Hope Davis and Stephen Lang, truly make the characters come alive right before your very ears. He takes you through all the trials and tribulations of being a parent, having your children taken from you by the judicial system, trying to protect them from great evil, and even losing one.
The characters of The Lake House were so motivating and real that they went on to inspire Patterson’s creation of the characters in his new, very popular Fantasy series, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment and School’s Out – Forever. That series might just be next on my fiction reading list!
I listened to The Lake House during my commute to work and found it so interesting and intriguing, that I actually found myself hoping to hit more lights and more traffic just so I could hear a bit more. And if I found myself in the parking lot at a particularly suspenseful or intriguing spot, I would sit there listening until I got to a better stopping point. It was hard to stop! This was one audio book that I could have easily listened straight through the entire seven and half hours in just one setting. I highly recommend The Lake House for an intriguing, suspenseful, highly imaginative experience.
