I will have to admit, Play Dirty certainly wasn’t one of Sandra Brown’s best starts to a book, nor was it a title I would have chosen. I had heard a bit of the beginning that was included in with Ricochet, an audio book by Sandra Brown as well, and had thought at the time, I might just have to skip this Sandra Brown novel. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my life, is the old cliché you can’t judge a book (or a person!) by its cover, so I decided to give it a chance.
The book starts very slowly, in fact the first 15 minutes of the audio book is just plain boring. I was beginning to think, oh no, it’s not any better than what I had heard already. But I kept listening anyway. I was disappointed at first how she didn’t really build the characters out and how the details seemed to be all mismatched and not connecting in any way. Do yourself a favor, and give the book a few more minutes of your listening time and I’m sure you’ll be as glad as I was because it takes off like a rocket once it finally launches!
The main characters are Laura Speakman, who is smart and attractive, but also finds herself the damsel in distress; Foster Speakman, who loves his wife very much even though she was the one driving when the catastrophic accident happened; and one Griff Burkett? who is tall, strong and handsome in a rough and tumbled way, carries a chip on his shoulder and cares for no one else but himself. Let’s not forget Mr. Burkhart who plays his character out in a variety of ways.
Laura and Foster Speakman (a Texas millionaire) run an airline together and everything was fantastic in both their marital and business relationship until the accident. For after the accident, Foster was no longer able to father a child, which he desperately wanted so he would have someone to take over the business and inherit all that he had amassed.
Foster spent practically every moment of his waking time trying to figure out a way around this kink in his meticulous plans. You see Foster had OCD, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which dictates to him how things must go and what sequence they must occur in. From the moment Foster had married Laura, he had thought of nothing else other than the conception of their child. However, Laura had requested to be a bride for just a bit before becoming a mother. The accident happened before she had started trying to conceive.
Foster’s grand scheme necessitated the involvement of another person. You see he didn’t want to go with artificial insemination; he wanted the conception to be all natural, in a loving environment. Thinking in this manner was part of his OCD, and how the sequence and order of things would greatly affect the outcome. Laura felt nauseated at the thought of having sex with another man to conceive her and Foster’s child, but she felt she owed it to Foster because she was the one driving the night of the accident.
So enter one Griff Burkett on the scene, an ex Dallas Cowboys quarterback, just out of prison for racketeering. Foster chose Griff for his looks that closely resembled Foster’s before the accident, and the fact that he knew Griff needed cash and would want sex, whatever kind he could get, after just spending the last five years in prison.
The twists and turns of fate after Foster hired Griff to help conceive Foster’s child are nothing short of spectacular. Sandra Brown does an excellent job fully developing the characters and plot leaving you begging for more at every pause. Parts four and five of the audio book CD, I had to listen to one right after another because I just had to know what was going to happen next. A tremendous mixture of real life, romance, heart break, mystery and suspense all wrapped up into one terrific novel. I highly recommend Play Dirty for your next audio book selection.
