Step On A Crack is the first in Patterson’s new series about Detective Michael Bennett of the NYPD. I have to be honest and say that I listened to Step On A Crack right after The Lake House which I liked immensely so that might have slightly skewed my opinion of this newest character of Patterson’s imagination.
Michael Bennett is the father of ten adopted children from varying backgrounds and cultures. He adores his loving wife, who being a nurse, just wants to nurture everyone she possibly can. Bennett can’t say no to her pleas of just one more child and voila… before he knew it they were a family of twelve!
Besides Bennett’s large family and the many duties that go along with that, he is the lead detective in the homicide department at the NYPD. As so often happens in real life, things come at Michael Bennett in crashing waves one right after the other.
His loving wife is losing a battle with cancer, his 10 children desperately need his love and attention during the trying family time, and New York City is having one of the biggest crisis since 9/11.
Bennett is stretched to his limits both physically and mentally trying to deal with it all in addition to being the first negotiator in a hostage situation. Then he gets put directly in the line of fire with the gunmen. All’s he can think about is staying alive and his ten children who are about to lose their mother.
I believe part of the reason Step On A Crack didn’t appeal to me was the all bad negative things that happened throughout the story. There weren’t many positive moments to grasp onto. The other reason was the very descriptive and ruthless violence the gunmen inflicted on the people they had taken as hostages.
Although it wasn’t my cup of tea, if you like detective stories with mostly negative outcomes and graphic and senseless violence against innocent people, then I’m sure you will enjoy Step On A Crack. James Patterson is definitely a great writer who can touch almost any place in your heart.
