The Wedding is the long-awaited follow-up to the well-known romance novel The Notebook which was also a major motion picture and did very well at the box office.
In The Wedding, Sparks once again takes romance to a new level. It is about a man named Wilson Lewis who had been so busy with building his career, that he just took his family for granted. He let his wife Jane, who was the daughter of Noah and Allie in The Notebook, raise the kids, run the household, and take care of anything and everything that didn’t have to do with his work or golf.
Jane had stood by his side for almost 30 years always being the supporting wife, not nagging, knowing her husband was working hard so the family could have a decent life. She just quietly and gracefully took care of everything that needed to be taken care while Wilson was away 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week. I mean get this, Wilson had never in 29 years even taken a 2 week vacation to spend with his family. Just a day here and there, and then those days were usually spent with his buddies out on the golf course.
Then as was inevitable, the day finally came when Wilson finally broke the last straw, sucking all the life and love out of Jane. She simply had no more to give him. When you give and give and give faithfully day after day and year after year with nothing in return, that’s one thing. However, what Wilson did on their 29th Wedding Anniversary was simply unacceptable to Jane after everything she had put up with for the previous 29 years.
The sad part was that Wilson really loved Jane. Actually she was the love of his life. He just didn’t know how to show it. His family had never been loving and caring, so he was never taught how to love someone. Jane had grown up in a family where love was everywhere and her father was possibly one of the most romantic, caring, and supportive husbands ever.
Jane could have taken the bull by the horns so to speak and taught Wilson how to love someone, but that was not in her nature. She so badly wanted the love and romance she had seen her parents experience, but at the same time wanted it to be natural and not forced.
The latter half of The Wedding details the extraordinary lengths Wilson went to in an attempt to win back what he wanted most – Jane’s undying love and respect for him.
Sparks does an excellent job with word selection allowing you to visualize and actually feel the emotions of such a real-life event as if you were right there with Wilson and Jane. I also loved the unexpected twist at the end of the book. It was totally unexpected, but incredibly romantic.
If you have experienced The Notebook and liked it, you’ll relate to the characters in The Wedding even more. However, don’t think The Wedding can’t stand on its own. Sparks is at his romantic best in this tender love story of two people who have lost touch with each other and one man’s determination to get his wife to fall in love with him all over again.
Highly recommended!
